What is Chlorophyll? 

Chlorophyll is the name of the pigment that makes plants (and microgreens!) green. Therefore, the greener a plant is, the more chlorophyll it will contain. Plants need chlorophyll in order to make food and nutrients through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the name of the process where plants convert light energy into chemical energy, which allows them to grow. Chlorophyll, water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight are needed for photosynthesis to take place.

Three Reasons Why You Need Chlorophyll (ABC)

Antioxidants: Vitamin C, vitamin K and chlorophyll all have something in common: they are high in antioxidants! Antioxidants are good for our bodies, because they help to prevent or slow down damage to our cells that can be caused by harmful molecules. This means the body is less likely to develop diseases. Green foods such as spinach and kale are packed with antioxidants, as well as chlorophyll.

Blood building: Another benefit of chlorophyll that isn’t visible to the naked eye is its blood building properties. Because of its protein-like chemical structure, researchers argue that chlorophyll improves the quality of your red blood cells. We need red blood cells to transport oxygen around the body. Having better quality red blood cells reduces the likelihood of blood clots, disorders, and in turn, will diminish the need for blood transfusions.

Cancer protection: Studies found that when given chlorophyll, rodents were less likely to develop tumours. That’s because the chlorophyll helped their bodies to stop absorbing cancer-causing agents. Although testing with humans is at an early stage, most scientists agree that a diet with plenty of green vegetables  that are high in chlorophyll will help to protect you against cancer. 

How Do I Get More Chlorophyll in My Diet? 

Chlorophyll supplements are popular because of their health benefits. However, instead of taking chlorophyll supplements that may have extra filler ingredients and side effects, we recommend getting more chlorophyll in your diet through fresh, whole, green plants—and microgreens! 

Look out for the greenest veg available: inside and out! That’s because the greener the plant, the higher the chlorophyll content inside. If you’re growing from home using your ingarden, we recommend our arugula and kale microgreens for their high chlorophyll content. If you’re in the store, choose peas, spinach, swiss chard, and leeks.
